(We only have a limited number of copies, so if you haven’t pre-ordered your copy, you can right here!)

Last week, we looked at one of the foundational strategies that the Vitawaasi use- laying traps and then using volleys of ranged attacks in order to punish hesitant enemies. This tactic works really well, but can be thwarted if Vitawaasi’s opponent uses high health units to absorb the traps, thus ridding the battleground. However, Vitawaasi can counter this as well- by implementing some of their new abilites that focus on previously wounded units.

ABILITY PREVIEW: Natural Hunter

Natural Hunter definition from the Vitawaasi faction overview.

Any time you can score an extra victory point, (which is what the white icon of the soldier holding up a flag indicates) it is a luxury. Games can come down to the slimmest of margins, and extra points here and there give you a distinct advantage. Natural Hunter is not going to be a top 10 ability, nor is it something to build a battle plan around, but it still is very helpful in the right situations. When your enemy takes damage from a ranged attack or a trap, watch for opportunities to eliminate it with your Natural Hunter unit. Let’s check out that unit!

UNIT PREVIEW: Tigromaul Ravager

The Tigromaul Ravager is an outstanding unit- perfect for tracking down hard to reach targets. Immune to Range makes it a nightmare for Parada and Moonshadow, while Stealth creates big problems for Kragg and Zyan. The vulnerable spot is spells, like most of Vitawaasi’s units. The Tigromaul can rip up enemies with a 4 attack attribute, often enough to eliminate units. The Natural Hunter ability comes into play nicely, because it only gives an extra point when the wounded unit is eliminated, and the Tigromaul is equipped to eliminate. With the additional defensive abilities, it’s at it’s best lurking around the traps or prowling the edges of the board, hunting down enemies. Natural Hunter is not a single use ability, so every time that the Tigromaul Ravager attacks and eliminates a wounded unit, the ability kicks in an extra point. The Tigromaul should see a lot of play against factions that focus on range and head-to head combat.

ABILITY PREVIEW: Exsanguinate

Exsanguinate definition from the Vitawaasi faction overview.

Exsanguinate is another Vitawaasi ability that plays off of wounded units that can deliver victory points. It’s a single use ability that can potentially shift momentum. If a couple of units are clipped with a ranged attack or have wandered through a trap, Exsanguinate is a smart move to tack on those precious couple of points. While it can be useful in head-to-head, it’s one of Vitawaasi’s best abilities in 3 and 4 player games. While the Trapper ability loses some luster due to there being more spaces to manuever, Exsanguinate stays effective, capitalizing on enemy players damaging each other. It’s a single use ability but using it at the right time can be a huge point boost. Now let’s analyze the unit!

UNIT PREVIEW: Kikiyaon Bloodhunter

The Kikiyaon Bloodhunter is an excellent unit- probably one of Vitawaasi’s best units in terms of value for cost. It is almost untouchable from enemy aerial unit melee attacks thanks to both Menace and Stealth. It’s not all that imposing with only a 2 health and 2 attack (4 prowess), but Menace scares away the little flyers and Stealth slows down the heavier hitters. The Bloodhunter has good speed with 3 movement, making it useful as an aggressor. Vitawaasi has relatively low faction movement, so having an affordable 3 movement unit that has some protections from attacks is extra important. Exsanguinate pairs really well with the Kikiyaon Bloodhunter’s defenses. The Kikiyaon can hover in a secluded spot, waiting for units to take damage. Then, when the time is right, use Exsanguinate to pick up points!

Thats all for this week but don’t worry– there is so much more to preview for Vitawaasi!
